These are Common Moorhen chicks at Lake Osprey, Lakewood Ranch, Florida in mid July. The two chicks are about 3 or 4 days old when I saw them and they followed Mommy and Daddy Moorhen closely. Even though Mommy tried to feed them, they got some food on their own. Moorhen have big feet and long toes so they can walk on soft mud and floating vegetation. The chicks stubby wings have spurs so they can climb and grab things.
The Moorhen chicks alien-like and wiry face will eventually transform into a good looking juvenile, then grow up to look very pretty like Mommy and Daddy Moorhens.
