Hezbollah ambush kills two Israeli soldiers in Sheba’a Farms

At least two Israeli soldiers have been killed and several injured in a Hezbollah ambush on their convoy inside the Lebanese territory. The attack took place in the Sheba’a Farms which has been under Israeli occupation since 1967. Lebanon’s National News Agency says Hezbollah fighters have also captured an Israeli soldier. Following the incident, Israel began to shell southern Lebanon, killing a Spanish UN peace keeper. The violence on the Lebanese border comes just hours after the Israeli army confirmed that its warplanes hit artillery posts in the territory controlled by the Syrian army. Tel Aviv claims the attack was in response to rockets allegedly fired from the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. Hezbollah has issued a statement saying its targeting of Israeli soldiers has been in retaliation to Tel Aviv's attack on the Syrian Golan Heights nearly two weeks ago. At that time, Israeli aircraft attacked the territory without provocation, and killed an Iranian general and several Hezbollah fighters. According to Reuters, the targets of the air strike included a Syrian military headquarters, a training facility and artillery batteries. The bomb that hit an Israeli army jeep carrying four soldiers was planted near the Syrian border in Majdal Shams, Haaretz reported. According to an initial investigation, the soldiers approached the border after suspicious figures were seen from a lookout tower. The explosive device was detonated as the soldiers exited the jeep. After the explosion, the soldiers were evacuated to Rambam Medical Center in Haifa for treatment. Three of them received light to moderate injuries while a fourth sustained serious injuries, Haaretz reported. Israel blamed Damascus for the roadside bombing, though parts of the Syrian-held side of the Golan are controlled by rebels, Reuters reported. Prime Minister Netanyahu said Israel will respond firmly to any threat. "The border with Syria is filling up with jihadi and Hezbollah forces," he was quoted by Haaretz as saying. "In recent years we have managed to maintain calm in the face of the civil war in Syria. We will also act firmly to safeguard the safety of the state of Israel." Israel captured the Golan from Syria in the 1967 war, but according to Reuters the annexation was not recognized abroad. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Israel treated more than 2,600 wounded Syrians under the cover of night

After dark, the Syrian wounded come to known locations on the Israel-Syria front in the Golan Heights, driven by desperation to seek help from the kindness of an enemy army. Israeli soldiers on lookout or patrol spot them waiting by the fence and whisk them away to a rear position where army medics soon arrive, according to army officials operating in the area that was seized by Israel in the 1967 Middle East war. It happens nearly every night.

Israeli soldiers injured in roadside blast in Golan Heights

Four Israeli soldiers have been wounded after a roadside bomb exploded in the occupied Syrian Golan Heights on Tuesday. The Israeli army said it fired on Syrian army positions on the other side of the border in retaliation. It was not clear who had planted the bomb. Violence in Syria has spilled over into the Golan Heights previously but these are the worst casualties Israel has suffered there since the Syrian uprising began three years ago. Israel captured the Golan from Syria in the 1967 war and annexed it in a move the rest of the world has never recognised.

Assad visits tomb of unknown soldier in rare public appearance.

ROUGH CUT - NO REPORTER NARRATION Syrian President Bashar al Assad visited the tomb of the unknown soldier in Damascus on Saturday (October 6) to mark the anniversary of the start of the 1973 Middle East war. State television carried pictures of Assad laying the wreath at the monument at Mount Kassioun on the outskirts of the capital in the company of military and civilian dignitaries. Assad has seldom been seen in public since the uprising against his rule started in March 2011. At the start of the 1973 war Syria and Egypt brought Israel to the brink of defeat with coordinated surprise attacks on its borders during the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur. But during the tree-week conflict that ensued they failed to retake the Golan Heights which Israel had seized during the 1967 Arab-Israeli war. Saturday was the fourth day of Turkish cross border strikes in retaliation for mortar bombs and shelling by Syrian forces that killed five Turkish civilians further east on Wednesday (October 3). The strikes and counter-strikes are the most serious cross-border violence in Syria's conflict, which began as a democracy uprising but has evolved into a civil war with sectarian overtones. They highlight how the crisis could destabilize the region. Turkish Prime Minister Tayip Erdogan said on Friday (October 5) his country did not want war but warned Syria not to make a "fatal mistake" by testing its resolve. Damascus has said its fire hit Turkey accidentally. NATO-member Turkey, once an ally of Assad but now a leading voice in calls for him to quit, has nearly 100,000 Syrian refugees in camps on its territory and has allowed rebel leaders sanctuary. Its armed forces are far larger than Syria's.

UN demands release of peacekeepers held hostage in Golan Heights

The United Nations has condemned the kidnapping of dozens of its peacekeepers close to the border with Syria and demanded their immediate release. Forty-three peacekeepers from Fiji were taken hostage in Al Qunaytirah in the demilitarised buffer zone between Syria and the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights on Thursday. Another 81 UN troops from the Philippines are trapped in their positions in Ar Ruwayhinah and Burayqah. They are surrounded by militants who have demanded they surrender their weapons, which they have refused to do. General Domingo Tutaan Junior, a spokesman for the Armed Forces of the Philippines, said the troops had a right to defend themselves: “Our soldiers are prepared, trained and capable of dealing with these situations and will take risks to fulfil our commitment to international security and peace. The peacekeeping contingent has the right to defend its position and the units in line with the UN protocols and rules of engagement,” he said. The UN has reinforced its positions in the area. On Wednesday, Syrian rebels including the Al-Qaeda affiliated Al-Nusra Front had wrested control of the border crossing from the Syrian government. Heavy fighting between Syrian government troops and rebel fighters is continuing close to the border. Israel seized Golan Heights from Syria in 1967 and both countries are still technically in a state of war. The UN monitors the demilitarized buffer zone, known as the “area of separation”, to keep the ceasefire between the two countries. The buffer zone is about 80 km long, and between 0.5 to 10 km wide. It runs from Mount Hermon on the Lebanese border to the Yarmouk River frontier with Jordan.

Israel has staged more than a dozen attacks on Syria

Syria says the latest Israeli airstrike on the Golan Heights has left at least five people dead. Syrian officials say the victims were unarmed civilians and died after their car was hit. Tel Aviv claims it has targeted four Palestinian fighters. The airstrike follows more than a dozen Israeli air raids and shelling on Syrian army positions in the Golan Heights on Thursday. The Syrian army says the attacks left one of its soldiers dead and seven others wounded at a military post in the southern region of Quneitra. Tel Aviv says the attacks were in response to rocket fire from Syria. Israel seized 1,200 square kilometers of the Golan from neighboring Syria in 1967. Syrian planes bomb rebel-held border post near Golan Heights

Syria’s civil war continues to spill over towards Israeli-held territory – with reports of President Assad’s jets shelling rebel positions close to the occupied Golan Heights. They are battling al Qaeda’s Syria wing – the Al Nusra Front – and other Islamist insurgents who are said to have seized a border crossing, amid fierce fighting in the strategic area. A rebel source insists the Islamists are holding their ground despite the heavy bombardment. During the clashes, two Israelis were wounded by errant fire – a soldier and a civilian, both in the Golan Heights. Israel captured the western part of the plateau from Syria in 1967 and annexed it, in a move not internationally recognised. Israel said it fired on two Syrian army positions in response to the cross-border incident. But the roof of an Israeli winery was also hit in this, the latest overflow of violence in Syria’s three-year-old conflict. Lebanon’s army is also said to have shelled militant positions in the border zone with Syria, near a town captured by Islamist rebels.

Israel's 'aggressive operations' on Golan Heights kill one and injure eight

One person has reportedly been killed and eight wounded in Israeli air strikes on Syrian military sites in Golan Heights. Israel captured and annexed part of the Golan from Syria in 1967 in a move not recognised abroad. Wednesday’s attack is apparently in retaliation for a roadside bombing that wounded four of Israel’s armed forces. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appeared intent on delivering a message to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. “The targets were Syrian forces who not only allowed, but also collaborated in, attacks on our troops,” he said. “Our policy is very clear; we hurt those who hurt us and, as far as possible, we will also thwart the transfer of arms at sea and by air. From time to time we are required to carry out aggressive operations – as we have just done – in order to ensure the calm.” The wounding of the soldiers on the strategic plateau marks Israel’s worst casualties there since 2011, and adds a dangerous new dimension to Syria’s ongoing civil war. Tuesday’s bombing ended what had previously been a stable, decades-old stand-off between the two adversaries.

Austrian UN troops withdraw from Golan Heights

Austrian troops begin to withdraw from the the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, as the crisis in Syria spills over the border. With roughly 380 soldiers stationed here, Austrians make up the biggest contingent of the 1,000 strong U.N. peacekeeping force. But Vienna announced last week that it would be pulling out its force following a four decade long presence after its soldiers were sent running for cover when Syrian rebels captured a border post. The rebels were later driven out by Syrian government troops. This contingent of 67 Austrian troops were leaving as part of a pre-planned troop rotation and will not be replaced by further troops from Austria. Vienna has said they have a timetable for a full withdrawal of all troops within four weeks. Negotiations are on-going at the U.N. about possible replacements from other countries.

Israeli official: Tel Aviv not interested in further escalation

An Israeli official says Tel Aviv is not interested in further escalation along the Lebanese border. The official has spoken on condition of anonymity to Israeli media following an emergency meeting in Tel Aviv. Senior Israeli officials including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and the minister of military affairs Moshe Yaalon attended the meeting. Earlier, some former generals advised Netanyahu not to take any steps that would pull Israel into a chaotic situation. The situation near the Lebanese border is calm a day after Hezbollah ambushed an Israeli convoy inside the Lebanese territories. Two Israeli soldiers were killed and several others injured. Hezbollah has issued a statement saying its targeting of Israeli soldiers has been in retaliation to Tel Aviv's attack on the Syrian Golan Heights nearly two weeks ago. Six Hezbollah members and an Iranian commander were killed in that attack.
