AMAZING CAPTURE ON SONG #5 and a great example of A MASTER OF MASTERS PERFORMING and TEACHING AT THE SAME TIME.
Series 31 TRUTH BE TOLD BABA Marvin Bu Ga Lu Smith April 6,2010 #'s 1-10 with Steve Habib's notes:
Song #1 is smooth and flowing as the first solo of Maicolm Cecil, Master bassiist expresses just beautiful harmony leading Marvin back into the mellow, nice, smooth groove that both players put down under Ron's guitar.
Song #2 shows a similar feel but more colors are added and the development of a SPECIAL EVENING is under way as the stage is set for one of my favorites here, the 3rd tune. Funky and swinging hard, Marvin and Malcolm follow Ron's lead into the woods and down the new roads of expression on their beautiful walk through the forest. Along the way Malcolm finds nice flowers to look at and expresses their besuty here on his lovely solo which leads Marvin into wide open pastures of HEALING LOVE. The drums capture your very essence and soul and if you listen hard enough and be open enough, you might find a wonderful gift of PEACE inside the center of this tune. It captures many different feels all at once.
Song 4 is a very soft expressive BALLAD and the way it should be played with MUCHO feeling and sensitivity The tune speaks for itself.
#5 is THE ASS KICKIN song of the evening for me. SWINGING SO VERY HARD both Marvin and Malcolm LAY IT DOWN WITH STRONG,HEAVY INTENT. Nothing is being held back here. It's moving along moment to ment with NOTHING BEING HELD BACK. It's as if they are playing as hard as they can as if they may never have the chance to do this again. Wow! What great solo work here by all of them.
For the student tracks, I must say that all of the students SHOULD STUDY #5 VERY CAREFULLY and LEARN HOW TO PLAY WITH MAX CONVICTION and PLAY DEEPER and HARDER. Also, students MUST REMAIN STUDENTS FOREVER and ALWAYS BE OPEN TO LEARNING SOMETHING NEW EACH TIME THEY PLAY. It's just like leaving the house in the morning and being open to enjoying the weather whether raining, snowing or sun shine, cold or hot. PLAY THAT! LISTEN MORE and stop depending on memorized licks. Dig DEEP INSIDE EACH OTHER and CREATE HARMONY,HARMONY,HARMONY. THE HARMONY THAT'S NEEDED TO MAKE ALL PEOPLE FEEL GOOD. LOOK FOR NOTHING BUT PEACE and your playing will advance. I see much more development in each player this week, especially Andrew. Kesai has a good balance but I want bto see more of his inner workings coming out of those drums. Jan MUST DIG DEEPER and TAKE MORE CHANCES. Fitz continues to play with an open mind and appears to be listening more. Dougie is expressing himself better and seems to be heading down a positive avenue. Again, WHAT I WOULD LOVE TO SEE IS THE DEVELOPMENT OF MORE INDIVIDUALITY IN EACH OF THE STUDENTS. When a person thinks he's KICKIN ASS he is typically falling into the negative,non-playing zone which will prevent him from playing at THE MASTER'S LEVEL. Let it all ride freely with little thought and DON'T DEPEND ON YOUR CHOPS TO GET YOU BY. Practice FLOW like the WIND,WATER,FIRE and EARTH-LIKE BASS TONES and ANCHORING and ROOTS as in CHORD ROOTS FOR PIANO and GUITAR PLAYERS.
Let it all flow and continue to FLOW MARVIN'S LEAD. DO NOT ARGUE WITH TRUTH. THE TRUTH HERE IS THAT ALL OF THE STUDENTS ARE ADVANCING BUT THEY NEED TO LET TIME AND EXPERIENCE DO MOST OF THE WORK. NOTHING REPLACES TIME. TIME IS THE MASTER. I'M 63 AND I KNOW SHIT COMPARED TO WHAT MANY OPTHERS KNOW. The fact that I am willing to EAT MY OWN EGO and then through it in the garbage, is my only hope of advancing.
What a wonderful evening of sensitive exploration into LIFE'S LEARNING LESSONS and the drum as a speaker cabinet of our SOUL.
Yeah guys, great job tonight. Hope all of you have a great lesson with BABA Marvin Bu Ga Lu on Sunday. Keep pushing yourselves hard, it's the only way. NEVER GIVE UP and NEVER RUSH TIME OR EXPERIENCE. YOU'LL GET THERE. IT"S DIFFICULT WHEN YOUR TEACHER IS A MASTER OF MASTERS!
LOVE TO EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU,
MASTER BABA MARVIN BU GA LU SMITH drums
Dr. Ron Petrides guitar
MASTER Malcom Cecil (Bass
