SEO Tutorial (Part 2)
What I am going to show you now is I am going to show you things that do matter but matter offsite. This is what I do for myself. This is what I do for clients. This is the method behind it.
Again, like I said a couple of times, Google cares more about what external websites have to say about your site than what your site actually says itself. You can say that you are Palm Desert Plumber all day long twice on Sunday and if you got it 7,000 times on your website, Google doesn’t care as much as if 7,000 websites outside of your site have a link to your site that tells Google and its algorithm that you are Palm Desert Plumber.
What we are doing here is we build links. As you cruise around the internet or if you want to build your ranking, the best thing you can do is get links back to your website from other places.
There are online directories, there are review sites like Yelp, this also ties in to online directories, there’s Yelp, there’s City Search, there’s Merchant Circle, which is more of a social network for businesses but it’s also a directory. There’s a bunch of site out there. These will all give you links back to your websites. There’s social media which is Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, Yelp has a social component to it. These all allow you to build links.
The problem with these is most of them just give you a standard link. You will get a www.pdplumber.com. I’m just making that up. I’m sure that domain name belongs to somebody but I don’t know who they are. Let’s just say this is your website.
Any links that you build from social media, review sites, online directories, anywhere where you just punch in your domain name, this is how it’s going to display. That doesn’t really give you much SEO value although it does tell Google that you are more authoritative than if you have none of these links.
What we want to do is we want to get links that link back to your pdplumber.com website but we want to use what is called Anchor Text.
When you are one a website you will see a link where (we switch over to blue here) we got text written on a website and then you will have a link that will say Palm Desert Plumber.
You will have black text, then you will have Palm Desert Plumber and then you will have more text and this is sort of a link. If you click on this, ideally what will happen is typically is it will take you to another website. It will open up a new window.
This text right there, this is Palm Desert Plumber, that is anchor text. Palm Desert Plumber in this instance is your anchor text.
If your website is pdrealestateagent.com, you would want your anchor text pointing back to your site to be Palm Desert Real Estate or whatever your keywords are that you going to go after. That is your anchor text - everything that is in this little box.
Again, if you are using an editor online that is part of the website that let’s you edit the HTML as you add the text, if it lets you put pictures in, if it lets you add links and stuff like that, ideally you want to be able to do this. Some of them strip it out. You are not going to be able to win all those battles. Some will strip this link out.
Let me show you how. Craigslist, for example, I think right now they will let you do one link in your description but you’ve got to code it in. There are other sites out there like that, like Ezine Articles and stuff like that. You can put links in. You are limited to how many you can put.
But this is how the code goes. If our website is www.pdplumber.com and our keyword or anchor text we want to use is going to be Palm Desert Plumber, this is how the code goes.
If you just got a text editor like Craigslist, they don’t give you an option to insert a link, then this is how you type this in to build some SEO value for yourself. This is the code. What you will do is you will have “text text text Your Link text text text”. This is the code. It’s going to be .
I’m running out of space here. What I am going to do is I am going to continue this on the next line but this should all be smooshed together. Starting right here, this is where you would put your keyword or your anchor text. In there we would put Palm Desert Plumber right here.
After that what you are going to do is you are going to refer back to this. It doesn’t really matter why or what now but I want you to see how it looks.
You do another bracket, a forward slash, lower case A, and then you continue with your text.
What that will do for you is when you go to save, if the program lets you do it and if you have this typed in correctly, it will give you your link back to your site.
That is one way that you can help build SEO value when you are doing stuff or if you are running ads on Craigslist, if you are commenting on forums or just cruising around the internet, finding what you can contribute or add content.
This system does not work on Facebook, it doesn’t work on Twitter, none of that. Although social media sites just give you a link back to your site. You’ll have to just give them that. They will give you a link but you are not going to be able to use anchor text or any of that for that.
I will put a link, I will put some of this in the description of the video so you guys can cut and paste how that goes.
